What’s Cultivated?

Cultivated is a newsletter bringing you everything you need to know about the cannabis industry.

Paid subscribers will get a little bit extra: They’ll have a first look at scoops and exclusive reporting about the biggest names and companies in cannabis.

Cannabis touches on everything from business and finance, to public health and social justice. I’m covering all of it.

Basically, I’m drinking from the news firehose 24/7 so you don’t have to.

I’ll curate what you need to know, report original stories and insights, and give you my take on things when I have something to say.

I’m also not going to be tied to the old way of doing things, journalistically speaking. I believe there’s a ton of value in curation as well as getting scoops. I’m going to give you my take and speak to you, the reader, directly.

I’m not going to tell you what stocks to buy or deeply analyze earnings reports every quarter. I’m also not going to promote products or influence you to buy stuff.

What I will do is dive deep into the people, companies, policies, and regulators that make cannabis tick.

I’ll explain why and how decisions get made, bring you inside the room for big moments, and break down wonky policy and financial machinations — and I’ll filter everything to leave out the fluff and keep what’s important.

Legalization and the associated economic opportunity is, in my humble view, one of the biggest social changes of my generation. I’ll be on the frontlines.

That’s cool, but who are you and why should I care?

I’ve been a mainstream financial reporter for nearly 8 years, and I pitched and built the cannabis beat at Insider.

I was on the ground when Canada became the first G7 country to legalize cannabis, and I’ve got a long track record of breaking news on million and billion-dollar deals, interviewing key figures including CEOs and members of Congress, and writing must-read analysis on the industry.

I’ve been on the beat a long time and I’ve seen a ton of change both in cannabis and media. My goal with this newsletter is to deliver quality information, write with some verve and wit, and maintain a personal connection to you all.

I want Cultivated to be a must-read for anyone involved in or interested in cannabis.

I’m bringing real reporting chops to the table, but I also want to have fun — it’s cannabis after all.
